Technology

Gemx 3D system,our industrial laser-based 3D printing system, fabricates pieces with a production solution that perfectly combines jewellery design, engineering, data processing, advanced materials and Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology.

Every detail of a piece, including measurements of even the smallest component, is designed by CAD softwares and engineered by data processing sofitwares and our technicians, before going into our laser-based 3D printing machines. The machines use SLM technology with high energy density laser (hundreds of watts) to create strong, complex and highly detailed designs that wouldn't be possible with any other technology and traditional manufacturing. For example, high performance ultra light-weighted parts with thin walls and intricate geometric structures which first benefited aeronautics, astronautics, national defence, automotive, medical equipments, dental, and education industries.

Advanced Materials

Our 3D printing system uses advanced materials, for example, gas atomised ultra fine metal particles with diametres of 10~35 micron, and combine optimised laser printing parameters specifically for the designs of artworks and jewellery and material characteristics of target material . Therefore, the system is perfect for fabricating delicate artistic jewellery and artworks with extreme complex geometrics and microstructures. Due to light-weighted feature, it enables easy transportations of small and medium size artworks and sculptures and comfortable wearing of chunky artistic statement jewellery. It also features easy integration of multiple components (like clasps, chains, or mountings) into a single object, thus reducing costs, labour and delays of assembly.

Why It Matters

Jewellery and accessories manufacturing industry, like many others, heavily uses moulding and casting as manufacture method. The “lost wax method”, which is a process of making wax moulds and then cast from the moulds, was invented 5,000 years ago in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia Area. It is the most commonly and widely used method to make metal jewellery and artworks. However, moulding and casting also has major limitations. It is highly energy consuming and polluting. It consumes 25%~30% of all energy involved in mechanical making industry. The most hazardous pollutions casting factories produce are solid wastes, air pollution. water wastes, noise, remaining heat, energy waste, and green house gas emission.
